Ribbon Cutting at Five RiversOn October 30, in recognition of national Disabilities Awareness Month, DEC offered some fun-filled activities to get the word out about recent expanisions to their outdoor access program. People with disabilities were invited to enjoy a beautiful fall day full of exhibits, demonstrations, and guided trail walks at DEC's Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar. US FIRST! To assist our customers with their inquiries the Office of Advocate for Persons with Disabilities wanted to clarify what our agency is able to provide when individuals call or email us for assistance. The Advocate's Office is a systems advocacy agency. Our Information and Referral (I&R) service can provide information and technical assistance and direct you to a provider in your geographic area that may be able to further assist you with your request. These community resources may have specific information that we do not have such as lists of accessible housing or locations or specific medical service providers. Although our agency does not operate a prescription coverage program, we can provide a list of programs for which you may be eligible. The agency has access to a wealth of information on the local, state and national level which may provide the exact information and assistance to meet your needs. The agency's information and referral database, SATIRN V, is available on line at satirn . Anyone who has access to the web can search for information as well. SATIRN is regularly being refined and updated. As such, we encourage people to let us know about specific services for individuals with disabilities and their families so that we can add these to our existing resource database.
This agency's legal unit does not have lawyers available to represent individuals. However, our attorney and other knowledgeable staff who can provide guidance and direct you to a source that might be able to provide legal representation. The agency has staff who are able to provide information, technical assistance and training regarding the Americans with Disability Act, state and federal accessibility standards and other state and federal laws and regulations. The agency's Technology Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities (TRAID) Project provides technical assistance and training on assistive technology for people with disabilities in conjunction with 12 regional technology centers.
