Some run-of-the-mill vacations aren’t enough for those that truly wish to explore. After all, many vacationers enjoy interacting within new cultures, seeing interesting landmarks that they have never heard of, and so much more. Perhaps you need to be stretched outside of your comfort zone.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate. Certainly doing vacations in an adventurous manner doesn’t have to involve thousands of dollars’ worth of plane tickets, and a week or two off of work. Perhaps you can take a road trip an hour away to do some interesting things near you.

Of course, you can always set your sights big. Keeping in mind the cost of an international vacation, you could get a great deal and go somewhere truly uncharted. Maybe you’d like to explore Russia, China, or go into Africa to explore other cultural environments.

You could head to a place like the developing Kazakhstan Democracy, and then take a road trip into other countries nearby. That’s certainly one advantage in some countries, as you can see many more; not something that some in the United States and Canada are used to doing. However, that and much more is possible.

Take a chance on your next vacation. Ditch Florida for an interesting town in North Carolina. Forget about Paris and go to Belgium and the Netherlands. You’ll be able to do some things that aren’t standard fare for a vacation of any caliber. You might just enjoy being a little more adventurous – isn’t that what a true vacation is about?

Wondering what to eat during your time in Portugal? You will not go hungry! Portugal offers a number of delicious local specials and good wine. You will find unique foods in each region, with many good restaurants.

Some of the newer restaurants offer vegetarian dishes, but Portugal is well-know for its meat. Beef, pork, lamb, chicken are made into special meat dishes around the country. If you’re in a hurry, you can try a grilled beef or grilled pork sandwiches.

Portugal is also well-known for its fish. There’s a famous dish called bacalhau, which is dry cod. There are many, many variations on this dish. Sardines are also popular, as is caldeirada, which is a potato stew with fish.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you will be pleased to discover the pastries, which use simple ingredients to create a delicious flavor. Many of these were developed by nuns in the 18th century. The names, like “bacon from heaven” (toucinho do céu), indicate their origins!

The following desserts are also typical of Portugal: flan, rice-pudding, and cheese. Sheep and goat’s milk cheeses are quite popular. Each region has its own bread and cheese. In the restaurants, bread is baked in house (or at the bakery next door).

If you’re a coffee drinker, you might like “bica” which is like espresso. You can get this from almost any restaurant or bar in Portugal. There are several variations: the italiana is half full, and the bica cheia is completely full. Of course, that’s not all: there are many variations! For example: a bica pingada is an espresso with a splash of milk.

Eating is a universal human pass time, as well as just a way to keep on going. Food can be everything from simple nourishment, all the way up to tasty entertainment. Where you get your meal tends to have a large impact on its quality, its taste and its presentation. However, a lot of people bring too many biases with them no matter where they go, which ruins the entire food experience for them.

In order to really enjoy the cuisine you’re tasting, you have to learn to let go of your expectations. While eating something composed of pigeon like squab might seem strange to some people’s palates, pretty much everything you eat is something dead. You have to get over your inhibitions about eating something you’ve never tried before, or pretty soon you’ll be eating nothing but the same stuff for meal after meal. A large part of the joy of traveling involves eating new and, let’s face it, bizarre things. If you wanted to do the same old thing, you could easily have just stayed home.

However, there are some things you need to keep in mind when you sample the food of the nation. For one thing, your allergies will follow you on vacation, so be wary of what’s in any new meals you might be sampling. Another thing you have to consider is that a lot of “folk” cuisine is pretty fattening. So if you’re on a diet, it might be best to dip your toe into this particular pool before you dive right in. As the old saying goes, discretion is the better part of valor.
