Search tips

Instructions

Use this page to search the SATIRN database by filling in or selecting options in some or all of the fields above. The database will be searched for records that contain the specified word, words, word fragment (using wildcards, see below), or selected item in the field in any order. Multiple words should be separated by spaces; only records containing all of the words will be returned. To search for a multiple word phrase, put it in quotes; any record having those words in that order will be returned.

You may use the * (asterisk) as a wildcard to match zero or more characters at the beginning or end of a word. If you use it at the end, the search will return entries that have at least one word beginning with the characters before the *. Likewise, if you use it at the beginning, the search will return entries that have at least one word ending with the characters entered. Wildcards may be used inside of quoted phrases.

You can also use the ^ (caret) and $ (dollar sign) characters to "anchor" the search to the beginning or end of a field respectively. That is, if you use "^deaf" in the Program Name field, your search will return all records whose program name begins with the word "deaf". See the examples below. Note that using more than one ^ or $ in a field makes no sense; if you try it, your search will not return any records. You may combine ^ and $ with * in your searches.

In fields where you can select options (e.g. Counties Served), you may select multiple options by holding down the Ctrl (or "control") key when you click on the county name.

If you fill in multiple fields, the results will satisfy all criteria. That is, a logical "AND" will be used. For example if you enter "alcohol" (without the quotes) in the Program Name field and "Schenectady" (also without the quotes) in the City field, the search will return all providers that have "alcohol" in the program name and are located in Schenectady. Filling in multiple fields thus narrows the search.

The following examples illustrate the results that would be obtained by filling in the Program Name field, given the following program names:

Note that these programs names are somewhat contrived and may not actually exist in SATIRN.
